Food-Grade Custom Silicone Molds in China: What Buyers Should Verify
A buyer-focused guide to food-contact silicone molds: intended use, platinum-cure materials, FDA 21 CFR 177.2600, EU framework, LFGB testing, pigments, traceability and finished-mold validation.
"Food-grade silicone" is not a complete specification.

For a custom mold, the correct material and documentation depend on what food touches the silicone, at what temperature, for how long, how often the mold is reused, which pigments are added, and which market the finished article will enter.
A chocolate mold used below 40°C, a baking mold exposed repeatedly to oven heat, and a silicone piece immersed in an acidic beverage for months are not the same food-contact condition. The material choice and test plan should reflect the real use, not a generic certificate attached to an unrelated silicone grade.

Start with the food and contact condition
Before asking "Do you have FDA or LFGB?", give the manufacturer five inputs:
- Food type - aqueous, acidic, fatty, alcoholic, dry, confectionery, etc.
- Contact temperature - chilled, ambient, hot-fill, baking or other thermal exposure.
- Contact time - minutes, hours, repeated cycles or long-term storage.
- Reuse pattern - single-use article or repeated-use mold.
- Target market - EU, United States, Germany or another jurisdiction/customer specification.
These parameters affect whether an existing material report is relevant and whether finished-article migration testing should be considered.
Platinum-cure is a process choice, not a compliance shortcut
Platinum-cured silicone is commonly selected for food-contact molds because it can provide clean curing, good thermal stability and controlled extractables when formulated appropriately.
But "platinum-cured" by itself does not prove:
- the exact compound meets a specific regulatory requirement;
- the pigment system is suitable;
- the finished mold was processed correctly;
- the article is suitable for every food, temperature or contact time.
The buyer should ask for the actual compound identification used on the order rather than accepting a generic "food-grade silicone" statement.
Material report vs finished-mold evidence
These documents answer different questions.
Material TDS
A technical data sheet may show:
- hardness;
- tensile strength;
- elongation;
- tear strength;
- density;
- recommended cure conditions;
- temperature range.
It helps engineering, but it is not automatically a food-contact compliance report.
Third-party test report
A laboratory report may show that a specific material or article was tested under defined conditions against a particular standard or regulatory requirement.
Check:
- sample description;
- material/color;
- test method;
- food simulants or extraction conditions;
- report date;
- laboratory identity;
- whether the report covers the same compound used on your order.
Declaration of Compliance / supplier declaration
A declaration may identify the product, intended use, applicable framework, traceability information and supporting documentation. Its exact form depends on the legal regime and product category.
A declaration should not be treated as stronger than the technical evidence behind it.
FDA 21 CFR 177.2600: know what the citation means
In the United States, 21 CFR 177.2600 addresses rubber articles intended for repeated use in food-related applications and includes compositional and extraction-related provisions.
A supplier should not market this as "the factory is FDA approved." The useful question is whether the actual silicone composition/article and test evidence support the intended use under the relevant requirements.
For a buyer, the practical checks are:
- Does the report identify the silicone material actually used?
- Is the test condition relevant to the intended application?
- Does the color/pigment match the production part?
- Is the report current enough for your customer's approval process?
EU food-contact requirements: framework and GMP matter
For the EU, Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 provides the general framework for materials and articles intended to come into contact with food. Commission Regulation (EC) No 2023/2006 addresses good manufacturing practice for food-contact materials and articles.
Silicone does not fit neatly into the same harmonized material-specific regime as every type of plastic. For that reason, buyers often need a combination of:
- framework compliance assessment;
- applicable national guidance or customer requirements;
- migration/extraction testing appropriate to the intended use;
- material formulation information;
- manufacturing traceability;
- GMP documentation.
If your retailer or notified laboratory has a specific test protocol, send it before production rather than asking the supplier to guess.
What "LFGB" usually means in buyer conversations
International buyers often say "LFGB certificate" when they actually mean a test package accepted for German/EU food-contact evaluation.
Treat LFGB as a testing/compliance requirement to define, not as a universal sticker that makes every silicone mold suitable for every food.
Ask the laboratory or customer:
- which sections/tests are required;
- which simulants and temperatures apply;
- whether sensory testing is required;
- whether the finished article or raw material must be tested;
- whether the specific color is included.
Pigments can change the compliance picture
A transparent or natural silicone and a heavily pigmented red, black or fluorescent mold are not identical formulations.
For a colored food-contact project, document:
- silicone base grade;
- catalyst/cure system;
- pigment/masterbatch identification;
- color target;
- whether the available test report covers that color system;
- any post-cure condition applied.
If the customer requires third-party testing of the finished article, test the production-equivalent color rather than an unrelated clear sample.
Post-cure should be tied to the material and intended use
Post-curing can be used for some silicone systems to complete processing and reduce certain volatile/extractable residues. It should not be presented as a universal requirement for every platinum silicone mold.
The correct approach is:
- follow the silicone supplier's processing recommendation;
- define the intended food-contact condition;
- apply the validated cure/post-cure route where required;
- document the lot and process used for the order.
Batch traceability is more valuable than a generic certificate folder
For repeat production, a buyer should be able to connect the shipped mold back to the material used.
A practical traceability record can include:
- project number;
- silicone grade;
- material lot/batch;
- pigment lot where relevant;
- cure date;
- post-cure record where specified;
- inspection record;
- shipment lot.
This matters when a customer later asks, "Does the test report we approved actually apply to these 50 molds?"
Application-specific examples
Commercial pectin gummy tray
Key inputs may include hot depositing temperature, formula type, cavity volume, tray flatness, repeated wash cycles and food-contact documentation.
Chocolate mold
Surface finish and release may be as important as temperature. The master finish determines gloss, while the material/document set still needs to fit the food-contact market.
Baking mold
Repeated elevated temperature and loaded tray stability become part of the engineering review. A soft tray can meet a material test and still be a poor production tool if it deforms when full.
Long-term immersed decorative silicone piece
This is a different risk category from a reusable casting mold. If a silicone article remains in a beverage for 6-12 months, the buyer should define the beverage chemistry and request a migration/stability program appropriate to long-duration direct contact. A raw material certificate alone is not enough.
Food-contact RFQ checklist
Send the following with your design:
- product/food type;
- maximum contact temperature;
- contact duration;
- number of reuse cycles if known;
- target country/market;
- required regulation/test standard from your customer;
- silicone color;
- cavity count;
- finished product dimensions/weight;
- cleaning method;
- first order quantity;
- whether finished-article third-party testing is required.

The goal is not to collect the largest stack of certificates. It is to build a document trail that matches the actual mold you are buying.
Specify the use condition before the certificate
The strongest food-contact specification begins with the use condition, then selects the silicone and evidence around it. "Platinum," "FDA," and "LFGB" are useful terms only when they are tied to the correct compound, color, test condition and finished application.
