"Tooling fee" is one of the vaguest lines on a custom silicone mold quotation.

What Should Be Included in a Silicone Mold Tooling or Setup Fee?
Setup around a master and box. A tooling fee should name CAD, master, first mold and what repeats later.

For an RTV mold project, that line might mean only a 3D drawing and master. It might include the prototype mold as well. On a large sculpture it may include a master, silicone skin, FRP mother mold and assembly hardware. If the quote does not define the physical and digital deliverables, the buyer cannot know what is being purchased.

The safest approach is to break the fee into assets and work stages.

Start by asking: what physical asset exists after this fee is paid?

A useful tooling scope should identify what is actually being created.

Possible assets include:

  • revised 3D model;
  • master model;
  • prototype silicone mold;
  • production master;
  • removable plugs;
  • inner core;
  • FRP mother mold;
  • cavity-layout board;
  • custom fixtures;
  • test casting.

If the supplier says "tooling USD 300," ask which of those assets are included.

The answer should not be "everything needed." It should be specific enough that two suppliers can be compared.

CAD and DFM are not the same work

A project can contain both.

CAD/modeling may include:

  • scaling;
  • rebuilding geometry;
  • adding logos;
  • creating missing surfaces;
  • converting photos/sketches into 3D;
  • generating an STL/STEP master file.

DFM may include:

  • locating the parting line;
  • deciding one-piece vs two-part structure;
  • undercut review;
  • wall and border sizing;
  • cavity spacing;
  • removable plugs;
  • vents/pour gates;
  • support-shell planning.

A quote that says "3D design included" does not automatically mean the supplier has engineered the mold structure.

For simple custom modeling, RUUIPON may quote around USD 50 when that scope applies. Complex sculpting or reverse engineering should be quoted by actual work required rather than forced into that number.

The master is usually a separate cost object

The RTV mold copies the master. That means the master can be one of the most valuable project assets.

Master cost can include:

  • 3D printing or CNC machining;
  • material;
  • support removal;
  • sanding;
  • sealing;
  • polishing;
  • texture preparation;
  • dimensional inspection.

For a detailed figurine or glossy product, master finishing may take more effort than the first silicone pour.

Ask whether the master is:

  1. temporary and destroyed during mold making;
  2. retained by the factory;
  3. shipped to the customer;
  4. customer-owned but stored for repeat orders.

Those are different commercial arrangements.

Prototype tooling should be defined separately from production duplicates

A first prototype may contain one-time engineering work. Production molds should ideally reproduce the approved structure.

A quotation can therefore look like:

If the supplier mixes all of these into the first unit price, ask for the repeat-order price as well.

What should test casting cover?

"Test included" should not mean only that the mold was filled with something.

The test should target the project risk.

Examples:

  • resin: bubbles, seam, release, undercut strain;
  • candle: wax release, seam, wick access, wall support;
  • plaster: breakage around fragile details;
  • concrete: shell support and dimensional stability;
  • gummy/chocolate: cavity volume, surface, flatness, release.

Also define who supplies the actual casting material. A generic shop resin cannot prove performance with the buyer's specific polyurethane system.

Two-part molds need more than the silicone itself

If the structure is two-part or multi-part, the tooling scope may include:

  • parting-board setup;
  • registration keys;
  • closure design;
  • pour/vent design;
  • trimming;
  • assembly check.

For large supported molds, add:

  • FRP shell sections;
  • flanges;
  • fasteners;
  • alignment features;
  • support base if required.

These should be listed. Otherwise the customer may receive the flexible mold but not the support system needed to use it.

What is reusable on a repeat order?

A good tooling discussion should answer this before the first order.

Reusable assets can include:

  • approved CAD revision;
  • master;
  • mold-box fixture;
  • logo insert master;
  • core pattern;
  • FRP shell pattern;
  • QC drawing.

The repeat mold price may decrease because the design/master work is already complete, but the silicone, casting labor, trimming and inspection remain.

This is why "tooling fee paid once" does not mean every future mold is only raw silicone cost.

What should the buyer physically receive?

Do not assume.

Your PO can state whether the shipment includes:

  • prototype mold;
  • production molds;
  • physical master;
  • FRP mother mold;
  • cores/plugs;
  • hardware;
  • sample castings;
  • printed inspection report.

Digital files should be listed separately.

What should be written about ownership?

Ownership is a commercial/legal point, not something the rubber itself answers.

Clarify rights to:

  • CAD/STL/STEP files created for the project;
  • customer-specific master;
  • physical molds;
  • FRP support shell;
  • unique cores/plugs;
  • replacement production from the archived tooling.

Do not assume a generic mold base, shop fixture, clamp or reusable mold box becomes customer property unless it was specifically sold.

Also define whether the supplier can dispose of the master after a period of inactivity or must request permission first.

A practical tooling BOM for buyers

For a complex custom RTV project, request a BOM-like scope:

This turns a vague tooling charge into a procurement asset list.

When a separate tooling fee is unnecessary

A separate fee may not be justified when:

  • the buyer supplies an approved physical master;
  • no CAD changes are required;
  • the mold is a simple repeat of an archived approved design;
  • the supplier has already amortized a standard fixture into unit price.

But the quotation should still explain the structure so the buyer knows why no NRE line exists.

What to ask before paying the deposit

Ask these six questions:

  1. What physical assets are created?
  2. Which digital files are delivered?
  3. What part of this cost will not repeat on the next order?
  4. Is one functional prototype included?
  5. What happens if the prototype exposes a tooling defect?
  6. Who owns and stores the master/support tooling?

If those answers are clear, the tooling fee becomes much easier to evaluate.
