Protect Fragile Details During Demolding

Plaster and similar mineral castings can be brittle.

DFM should consider:

  • thin fingers/tips
  • flat-back vs full 3D
  • release direction
  • split line
  • casting thickness
  • support during removal

A softer mold is not the only solution; geometry may need adjustment.

Use the Mold Structure That Matches the Sculpture

Possible structures:

  • one-piece open-back
  • slit/cut mold
  • two-part mold
  • removable plug/core
  • silicone skin with rigid support shell

Choose the structure after reviewing the complete geometry.

The Master Defines the Casting Surface

Approve:

A mold faithfully reproduces defects in the master as well as intentional detail.

Yes.

Can you make molds for plaster?

Yes. The geometry should be reviewed for fragile features and release.

Is RTV the only process RUUIPON offers?

No. This solution page focuses on flexible casting molds. RUUIPON also supports HCR/HTV, LSR and overmolding projects elsewhere in the site.

Can you create a silicone mold from 2D artwork for a plaster figure?

Yes. The 2D art can be developed into a 3D relief or sculpted model. The 3D model should be approved before the mold is made.

Can multiple Nativity/figurine characters share one multi-cavity mold?

Yes, when practical. We review depth, release, fragility, fill method and overall mold size before grouping different figures.

Can you perform a test cast before shipment?

Yes, when test casting is included in the quoted project scope. The material used for the test should be specified so the result is meaningful.

How should a flat-back decorative figure be molded?

A one-piece open-back mold is often a good starting route, but final structure depends on undercuts, depth and fragile details.
