If you're running low volume through a custom RTV silicone mold, you're in a setup-cost problem, not a craft aesthetic. The right question is: will this SKU ever pay for a bigger multi-cavity tray, a depositing fixture, and a standing recast program, or is it a seasonal chocolate, a resin short run, a spare, or a trial? If it won't pay, buy a master and a pour that match the dump band. If it might pay later, say so, and don't pretend a tin glove is a platinum production skin.

Unmix processes. A hundred platinum RTV castings from a rubber mold is low volume. A hundred LSR *parts* from a single-cavity aluminum tool is also low volume. They're not interchangeable quotes. The LSR path is a different quotation for a molded *part*, not this RTV mold.

What “low volume” means on an RTV PO

There's no sacred cutoff. In shop practice, low volume is when master cost, pour setup, and first-article labor dominate piece cost: color of the dump, short table occupancy, and the fact that a 24-cavity depositing jacket will never earn back. For some resin jewelry that's dozens of casts. For a seasonal gummy it might be a few thousand dumps. The RFQ should state annual dumps, lot quantity, and whether a second season exists. “MOQ please” without those three numbers is how you get a high-volume quote in disguise.

Food-contact files and drawing tolerances still apply at low volume if the drawing says they do. Quantity doesn't waive chemistry. ISO 3302-1, if you put it on a rubber *article* drawing, is a tolerance class — it isn't another word for precision of the mold.

Honest low-volume RTV paths

Typical paths:

  • Single-cavity or 2–4 cavity platinum RTV with a simple box and jacket, when you expect a recast or a second season. Faster to pour than a 24-cavity tray, kinder to recut the master, limited throughput on a depositing line.
  • Tin-cure glove off a dirty or sulfur-bearing master for a handful of resin casts. Label it short-run. Don't store it as a library dimension.
  • Printed master + platinum skin for geometry checks and a few dozen dumps. Finish the print; layer lines are the texture.
  • CNC master + keyed split when the logo is real and you expect the SKU to grow, even if year-one dumps are modest.

Don't buy an 8-cavity hardened *steel* LSR stack for 500 silicone *parts* if what you needed was a chocolate cavity — and don't buy a 24-cavity RTV depositing tray for 80 resin figures. You'll pay for cavitation you can't amortize, then store a warped jacket.

HCR compression at low volume is a different factory. Platinum RTV is honest when the *part* is actually a casting (resin, food, wax) or when you need a flexible tool off a master. It's the wrong answer to “I need 2,000 LSR gaskets.”

Common mix-up: MOQ as a law, and tin as a production mold

A lot of RFQs treat a factory MOQ as physics, or they use tin-cure RTV as a production mold for dimensional parts that must recast next season. In the shop that usually means you're paying for someone else's high-volume drum policy, or you're freezing a time-dependent cavity as if it were platinum. MOQ is setup and compound-lot reality, not a law. State annual dumps, lot quantity, and color count of the *dump*. A shop that quotes a huge MOQ on a simple single-cavity RTV tray may be a high-volume candy house. A shop that quotes 50 dumps on a 24-cavity jacket is hiding the master cost somewhere else.

Other traps: approving a prototype print master as if it were SOP aluminum, then discovering flash and shrink at quantity; waiving inspection “because it's only 200 dumps,” then shipping a mixed-cavity bag with one bad pocket; designing for a future 12-cavity without CAD-safe logos, so the bridge mold teaches you nothing you can keep.

Low volume still consumes drums, pigments of the dump, and certificates. A custom gummy color on a 300-dump lot can cost more than the rubber. Certified lots (FDA 21 CFR 177.2600, LFGB) have minimum buys at the compounder. Each dump-color change is a purge of the depositor. Bunch SKUs that share a grade.

A tool that runs twice a year still needs storage, unstressed jackets, and a mix sheet a new technician can find. The second season often fails because the first season's heroics were never written down. Budget a start-up dump (not mixed into sale cartons) on each restart.

What to ask when you're buying

  • Annual dumps, lot size, and is there a year-two?
  • Platinum or tin, cavity count, and is the jacket built for a table or a depositor?
  • Is a recast included, or is this a one-pour glove?
  • Who owns the master if the SKU dies after 400 dumps?
  • Food-contact path on this small lot, or a written waiver?
  • Restart plan: mix sheet, retains, start-up dumps that aren't sale stock?

If those cells are blank, the low-volume quote is a high-volume quote in disguise.

Worked example

A seasonal chocolate, 90 × 45 mm bar, 4-cavity platinum RTV, keyed split, plaster jacket, about 600 dumps for the winter run and a maybe on year-two. The shop CNC'd a small aluminum master, poured platinum, and wrote a recast option rather than a 16-cavity depositing tray. Year-two happened; they recast the skin against the unsanded master. A tin glove from a dirty print would have drifted by the second season, and an LSR *part* quote never would have dumped cocoa butter.

Medical and infant *trial lots of molded parts* look like low volume and behave like high documentation — that's usually the other product line. Don't shop a chocolate cavity to a kitchen-mold house for an implant trial, or the reverse, just because the piece count is small. Export packing for small lots still needs HS description and a packing list customs can read. Air freight on 15 kg of molds is often rational; sea freight on a sample carton isn't.

When "low volume" is the wrong RTV conversation

If you actually need 2,000 LSR gaskets, a platinum tray won't reproduce that process window — that's a parts quote. If year-two dumps are already real, a tin glove "to save the master" is usually more expensive than platinum plus a recast clause. A 24-cavity depositing jacket for 80 resin figures is high-volume hardware on a low-volume SKU. Geometry can override quantity: one hollow ice sphere with a mandrel can need production-intent keys at 150 dumps.

We would not recommend buying depositing cavitation you cannot amortize, or storing a tin glove as a library dimension for a second season. We would not waive first-article “because it’s only 200 dumps,” and we would not cut an 8-cavity LSR steel stack when the object is a chocolate cavity. Raising Shore A first is the wrong cost cut; match chemistry and cavity count to the dump band.

FAQ

Is there a standard MOQ for custom RTV molds? No. MOQ is the factory's setup and drum reality, not a law. State annual dumps, lot quantity, and color count. Compare equal chemistry and equal cavity count.

Can I start on a printed master and recut CNC later? Yes, if you treat the print as a learning tool: freeze geometry, shrink direction, and splits, then recut CNC with those lessons. Don't assume the printed texture is the brand grain. Budget the second master. The print isn't a spare cavity for the CNC master.

Does low volume skip first-article inspection? It shouldn't, if the drawing has real tolerances or a regulated dump. You can slim the pack (fewer destructive tests, one cavity if it's single-cavity), but unlabeled dumps and no mix sheet are how 200-piece lots become 200-piece rejects.

Is tin-cure cheaper than platinum at a few hundred dumps? Often on the drum, sometimes on risk. Tin is more forgiving of dirty masters and keeps moving. Platinum costs more and holds size. Quote both only when the run can actually live with tin's drift. Dimensional recasts next season usually want platinum even at modest volume.

Should I keep a platinum RTV mold for spare-part castings? For castings, yes if the rubber is platinum and stored unstressed. For LIM-style gaskets that must match a steel SOP, no. RTV won't reproduce a production LSR process window. Keep this mold in the casting family it was bought for.
