How to Approve a Prototype Silicone Mold Before Production

A prototype silicone mold should not be approved because it looks good in a photo. It should be approved because the highest-risk production.

A prototype silicone mold should not be approved because it looks good in a photo. It should be approved because the highest-risk production assumptions have been tested: the real casting material fills correctly, the finished part releases without unacceptable damage, critical dimensions or weight meet the requirement, the mold remains stable under the real load, and the approved revision is recorded.

First mold on the floor. Approve the real pour, peel and dimensions before multiplying 20 tools.

The correct checklist changes with the application. A gummy tray needs different evidence from a resin figurine or a concrete planter.

Write the pass condition before the sample arrives

Before testing, finish this sentence:

The prototype passes if ____________________.

Examples:

  • a 4 g pectin gummy meets the target weight across center and edge cavities;
  • the plaster figurine demolds without breaking the arms or ears;
  • the resin logo reproduces completely with no trapped air in the lettering;
  • the planter core produces the agreed wall-thickness range;
  • the loaded tray remains acceptably flat in the customer support fixture.

This prevents the sample review from becoming a vague "looks fine" email.

Test with the production material whenever possible

Water is useful for measuring cavity volume. It does not prove how pectin, epoxy, wax, soap, plaster or concrete will actually fill and release.

Important variables include:

  • viscosity at fill;
  • fill temperature;
  • exotherm;
  • cure/set time;
  • shrinkage of the casting material;
  • fragility at demold;
  • surface interaction;
  • operator release method.

For a commercial mold, use the intended process or the closest controlled substitute and document the difference.

Check critical-to-quality dimensions, not every CAD dimension equally

Identify the few measurements that create a functional reject.

Possible CTQs include:

  • cavity volume;
  • finished piece weight;
  • fit/sealing diameter;
  • core location;
  • wall thickness;
  • tray flatness;
  • first-cavity datum;
  • logo depth;
  • parting-line mismatch;
  • finished casting height/width.

Flexible molds also need a defined measurement state: relaxed, supported on a flat plate, assembled in the mother mold, or installed in a fixture.

Multi-cavity molds need a position map

Do not test only the center cavity.

For a 20-, 50- or 100-cavity tray, sample at least positions that reveal systematic variation:

  • center;
  • corners;
  • outer row;
  • near the gate/fill direction if relevant;
  • any location that visibly deflects.

For gummy or chocolate programs, record cavity volume or finished piece weight by position. If edge cavities differ, determine whether the cause is cavity geometry, tray deflection or depositing/filling behavior.

Demolding is an acceptance test

Watch how the part is removed.

Red flags include:

  • excessive stretching of one thin mold section;
  • repeated use of metal picks;
  • twisting a brittle plaster part through an undercut;
  • pulling the casting instead of peeling silicone away;
  • seam opening that damages a small logo island;
  • a core that can only be removed by forcing it.

A sample that survives one heroic demold is not automatically production-ready.

Surface and detail should be inspected on the casting

The mold surface alone does not prove that the finished part will be acceptable. Inspect the first casting for:

  • complete logo/letter fill;
  • gloss/matte reproduction;
  • trapped air at high points;
  • seam/flash visibility;
  • texture continuity;
  • thin projections;
  • bubbles caused by the molding surface itself versus the customer's casting process.

Photograph the approved surface under repeatable lighting.

Loaded behavior matters for large or soft molds

A large empty tray may lie flat and then bow after it is filled. A tall candle mold may stand straight empty but bulge under hot wax. A concrete or plaster skin may need the mother mold installed before any dimensional judgment is meaningful.

Test the mold in its intended support condition.

Lock the revision after approval

The approval record should include:

  • job/PO number;
  • CAD/master revision;
  • silicone grade and Shore if controlled;
  • prototype ID;
  • date;
  • casting material/formula used;
  • CTQ results;
  • approved photos;
  • open deviations accepted by the buyer;
  • changes required before production.

A reorder months later should point back to this record.

When to revise instead of approve

Do not approve simply to protect the deadline if the prototype shows a repeatable functional problem. Revision is justified when:

  • a parting line crosses a critical cosmetic face;
  • a fragile casting cannot demold reliably;
  • a tray deflects beyond the customer's process limit;
  • cavity weight misses the target systematically;
  • a logo island tears the mold;
  • an inner core shifts;
  • actual material causes cure/release issues not seen in the demo test.

Fix the mechanism, not the photograph.
