Custom Food-Grade Silicone Molds

A food-contact silicone mold has two jobs: it must work as a production tool, and the selected material/documentation must be appropriate for the intended food-contact use.

RUUIPON develops custom silicone molds for gummy, chocolate, candy, baking, ice and other food applications. The mold can be designed around finished product size, target piece weight, cavity count, logo/detail, tray size, filling method, support and the buyer’s production workflow.

For food-contact projects, the material and available documentation should be confirmed for the selected grade, intended use, use conditions and destination market.

Important inputs include:

“Food-Grade” Is a Project Specification, Not a Factory Badge

When a buyer says “food-grade silicone,” the next questions should be:

  • Which material or article is being evaluated?
  • What food or formulation contacts it?
  • At what temperature?
  • For how long?
  • Is it repeated use?
  • What cleaning method is used?
  • Which country/market will receive the product?
  • What report, declaration or retailer requirement must be satisfied?

A generic statement such as “FDA/LFGB silicone” is not enough to answer those questions.

RUUIPON does not describe the factory itself as “FDA approved.”

Food-Contact Documentation: What the Buyer Should Match

United States

For applicable repeated-use rubber food-contact articles, 21 CFR 177.2600 can be a relevant regulatory reference.

The important point is scope: the buyer should confirm what material/article and test or declaration the evidence relates to.

European Union

Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 provides the general framework for materials and articles intended to come into contact with food.

Project-specific evidence still needs to match the actual material/article and intended conditions.

Germany / BfR

BfR recommendations can be used as scientific/technical guidance for relevant food-contact materials. BfR Recommendation XV addresses silicones.

BfR recommendations are not binding legal standards and should not be presented as a generic “EU certificate.”

Material Evidence and Mold Engineering Are Different Questions

A material report does not prove that a mold will:

  • produce the correct piece weight;
  • release the real food formula cleanly;
  • stay practical when filled;
  • fit a depositor;
  • reproduce a logo;
  • survive the buyer’s actual operating and cleaning process.

Likewise, a good mold design does not replace the required food-contact evidence.

Both must be addressed.

Define the Use Conditions Before Selecting the Material

For an RFQ, provide:

Food / Product

Gummy, chocolate, batter, ice, candy, another food or food-contact use.

Contact Temperature

Include the normal and maximum contact condition that matters to the process.

Contact Duration and Repeated Use

A brief molding cycle and prolonged contact are not the same use condition.

Food Composition

Where relevant, note oil/fat, acidity, alcohol or other conditions that may affect the compliance/testing route.

Cleaning

Tell us how the mold will be washed or sanitized.

Destination Market

U.S., EU/Germany or another destination can change the document set a buyer expects.

Build the Mold Around the Production Process

Target Piece Weight

For gummy, chocolate or other dosed products, start with the target finished piece and validate it with the actual formulation/process.

CAD volume is useful for design; the real fill/test is the production check.

Cavity Layout

Cavity count is not automatically “more is better.”

Review:

  • tray outside dimensions;
  • filled weight;
  • support;
  • depositor pitch;
  • operator handling;
  • demolding.

Logo and Fine Detail

Branding has to balance visual detail, complete filling, product strength and release.

There is no universal logo depth or line width that works for every formula and product size.

Tray Support

A large flexible tray may need a rigid pan, frame or other support in the buyer’s process.

Harder silicone is not always the correct substitute for better support design.

Prototype With the Real Food Process

Before repeat production, test the conditions that matter to the SKU.

For example:

  • target piece weight;
  • fill completeness;
  • logo readability;
  • release;
  • tray stability when filled;
  • depositor alignment;
  • bake/freeze handling where relevant;
  • cleaning and repeated handling.

A prototype approved only from a photo may not answer these production questions.

What Affects Price and Lead Time?

The quotation can change with:

  • mold size;
  • silicone consumption;
  • cavity count;
  • one-piece vs split/core structure;
  • support shell/frame;
  • CAD/modeling work;
  • master/tooling method;
  • prototype/testing scope;
  • required material/documentation;
  • production quantity;
  • packaging and shipping.

These are project variables.

Commercial baseline: Standard MOQ is 20 pcs. If CAD/3D modeling is required, the standard modeling fee is USD 50. Tooling, unit price, lead time and shipping are confirmed for the specific project.

Send:

  1. food/product type;
  2. CAD, drawing, artwork, physical sample or photos;
  3. finished dimensions or target piece weight;
  4. cavity-count or tray-size target;
  5. filling/depositing method;
  6. use temperature and duration;
  7. cleaning method;
  8. prototype and production quantity;
  9. destination market;
  10. required reports/declarations/customer standards;
  11. target schedule;
  12. delivery location if freight/DDP is required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does “food-grade silicone” mean the factory is FDA approved?

No. Regulatory references and test reports apply to materials/articles and their scope; they are not a blanket factory approval.

Can one food-contact report cover every silicone mold and every color?

Not automatically. Check the report/sample/material identity and whether the formulation, color, article and use fall within its scope.

Can the same mold be used for gummy, chocolate and baking?

Sometimes geometry may overlap, but the formula, contact temperature, release and production process can be different. Do not assume one mold specification is universal.

Should we choose silicone hardness before sending the RFQ?

You can provide a requirement if you already have one, but hardness should otherwise be selected with the mold geometry, support, release and material properties in mind.
