Split Silicone Molds: Keys, Seam, and When One-Piece Fails

A split RTV mold is a keyed two-part cavity, not a prettier tray. Put the seam on a hidden equator, lock halves with keys, vent the high point. MOQ 20.

A split silicone mold is the tool you buy when a one-piece peel cannot leave the cavity. If you're tooling a two-sided logo, a bail, a negative-draft letter, or a full-3D sculpture, the job is a keyed A/B RTV - seam on the least-visible equator, registration keys that cannot assemble backwards, a pour gate that fills downhill, and vents at the last place air will sit. Soft Shore does not delete a hook. Don't buy a split because the catalog photo looked "more professional."

RUUIPON builds those keyed two-part (and plug/core) cavities in Bao'an. The object is master, box, A/B, vacuum, keys, jacket, recast. Prototype 3-7 business days after CAD lock. MOQ 20 pieces per design. Custom/simple 3D modeling is USD $50 when that scope applies. This URL is the commercial split-mold page; the shop explainer is split lines and registration keys. When a split is the mold, not an upgrade

Buy a split when any of these is true:

  • Two-sided brand or a letter that undercuts the face.
  • A bail, hook, or closed "V" serif the rubber cannot peel.
  • A sculpture with no flat back.
  • A core or plug is cheaper than stretching a glove until it tears.

Keep an open-back tray when the back is flat, the dump peels, and there is no negative draft. A 12-cavity chocolate bar does not become more OEM because you added a second half.

Common mix-up: extra keys instead of a better seam

Mismatch on dump 1 is not "need more pips." Extra keys on a warped, thin flange still walk. Move the split so both halves are stiff enough, then size keys so they cannot close 180° wrong. A floppy 10A-20A skin still wants a mother mold to carry the shut.

What we freeze before anyone cuts the box

  • Cosmetic face and the one seam the brand will live with.
  • Pour orientation and viscosity of the real dump (pectin is not water).
  • Split vs plug vs inner core - named, not "shop to advise."
  • Jacket yes/no. Keys live in the shell on a large two-part.
  • Seam cleanup labor. A pretty split that needs five minutes of flash pick is a recurring cost.

Failure: seam across the logo, or halves that walk

Symptom: Hairline on the brand face; fingernail mismatch; flash that changes every dump; tear at the thinnest shut.

Confirm: Dry-assemble empty. Cast once in the real material. Mark which half walked. Measure rubber thickness at the tear.

Fix: Move the split off the cosmetic face, thicken the shut or add the jacket, recut keys so they cannot assemble backwards. Recast the skin against the same master. Don't "just run it softer."

Worked example: 40 mm lollipop letter with negative draft

A confectionery buyer needed a 40 mm lollipop with a letter that undercut the face, food-contact, first one cavity then a 6-up sheet. A one-piece peel would have torn the serif. Split off the letter, CNC bosses in the jacket, high-tear platinum skin, gate at the stick, vents at the letter counters. That seam is cleanup on every dump - named on the RFQ. Prototype 3-7 days after CAD lock, then MOQ 20.

What to ask when you're buying a split mold

  • Where is the seam in a screenshot, and is that face cosmetic?
  • How do the halves key, and can they assemble backwards?
  • Where are the pour gate and high-point vents for *this* viscosity?
  • Is a removable plug cheaper than a one-piece glove?
  • Is the jacket in the price, or only the skin?

When this page is the wrong route

A flat-back gummy or chocolate tray with no undercut is open-back RTV - don't buy a two-part for the photo. If the article is a molded silicone *part* in the thousands, you need steel/aluminum at WYD, not a keyed RTV jacket. Geometry can override quantity: two molds of a two-sided mascot still need keys.

We would not recommend a one-piece glove for this geometry

We would not recommend a one-piece open-back mold if the part has a bail, a letter with negative draft, or a two-sided logo. We would not raise Shore A first to hide a walking shut - add keys and a jacket. We would not put the seam across the most visible face to make the box easier to cut.

FAQ

Can you hide the seam completely? On a full-3D part, no. You can hide it on an equator the customer doesn't photograph. Zero-flash as a CTQ drives shut design and cleanup labor, not an invisible cut.

How many registration keys? Enough that halves cannot shift *and* cannot close 180° wrong. Three to six on a hand-sized mold is a common shop band.

Does a mother mold replace keys? No. The jacket stops bulge. Keys stop mismatch. Large two-parts usually want both.

Will a softer Shore skip the split? Usually no. A hook is still a hook. Open one-piece vs split.

What's MOQ for a split mold? 20 pieces per design after prototype approval. Prototype 3-7 days after CAD lock. Custom/simple 3D is USD $50 when that scope applies.
