Sticky Resin Mold: Clean, Repair, or Recast
A resin mold that feels sticky can be leftover film, a chemically changed face, or a tear that makes peel feel worse. If you are deciding whether to wash, patch, or recast an RTV resin tool, this page is that split. The wrong solvent can turn a recoverable film into a swollen cavity.

Classify the sticky face
Residue: tack follows one bad batch, film is visible, the rubber feels normal after a correct clean. Surface change: tack remains after cleaning, the rubber is swollen or soft, or release worsens with one chemistry. Mechanical grip: the face is not tacky; a deep undercut or logo still fights peel.

Least aggressive clean
Lift cured bulk without gouging the cavity. Then use the mildest method compatible with that resin / RTV pair. Escalate only when the material note supports it. Avoid metal picks, razors, abrasive pads, unknown soaks, and long solvent baths. Every scratch reprints on the next casting.
Inspect the tear start
A nick in backing can wait. A nick on a parting land, thin web, logo island, key, or seal is production. Record length, direction, whether it grows, and whether it reaches the cavity. If the tear sits on the same high-strain geometry, a patch does not remove the cause.
Repair is usually temporary
A compatible silicone patch can buy time on external backing. It is a poor bet on cavity detail, a sealing seam, or a precision web. Never repair over residue or a swollen face. Recast from the approved master when the design already worked.
Worked example: amine film
Typical job, not a named PO. Buyer soaked a sticky 20A epoxy tray in an unknown thinner. The film was gone; the face stayed swollen. We refused another soak, recast from the master, and wrote mix-ratio on the job card. The cup from that batch had also been tacky.
