CAD from a Physical Sample: Calipers, Not a Phone Beauty Shot

CAD from a physical sample is the bench-caliper path: OD, cavity depth, island width, and texture copied from a part you own - not guessed from a cropped product-page photo. If you're sending a chocolate bar, a resin master, or a worn tray you have rights to, we measure it, decide whether to reconstruct damage or copy as-is, then build a freeze-ready model. Custom/simple 3D modeling is USD $50 when that scope applies. A selfie of someone else's Amazon mold is not this service.

What the calipers have to catch

Overall length/width/height in millimetres, in the same plane as the face.
Cavity depth vs wall if it's a vessel.
Logo island width and depth.
Undercuts you cannot see in a three-quarter shot.
Wear: stretch, chips, yellowing - copy or reconstruct, named.

Don't use a coin as the commercial datum. Don't copy a stretched old RTV as the new nominal - replacement.

Common mix-up: photos = CAD from sample

A physical sample allows dimensions and surface details to be measured directly. If only photographs are available, include multiple views and a visible scale; critical dimensions may still need confirmation before CAD approval. For weight-sensitive cavities, agree how volume and finished piece weight will be validated.

Failure: cropped PDP became the master

Symptom: 8% long; texture from a filter; copied a purchased mold we cannot tool; worn sag became nominal.

Confirm: Was a sample on the bench? IP yours? Reconstruction vs as-is written?

Fix: Ship the sample. Stop the master. Don't multiply to 20.

Worked example: worn 12-up bear tray the brand owns

Brand shipped their golden-sample tray, not a competitor's. We calipered OD and cavity depth, ignored edge set, rebuilt CAD, $50 simple model scope, CNC master, prototype 3-7 days after lock vs the golden dump, then MOQ 20. Copying the sagged outer row would have locked 3-6% heavy bears.

When this service is the wrong path

You already have freeze-ready STEP: skip to DFM. Licensed/competitor product: we won't copy. LSR part reverse-engineering: an HTV product or mold RFQ here, or ask us if you need a high-volume LSR cold-runner tool. Geometry can override: a one-off sculpture sample still needs calipers.

FAQ

Is this the same as $50 modeling? It can be, when the sample is simple. Scans of organic sculpture are scoped first.

Can you start from photos while the sample is in the mail? Review yes. Lock no.

Do you return the sample? Write it. Masters and samples are not dunnage.

What if the sample is a mold, not a part? Don't copy stretch. Prefer the original master or a finished casting.
