An off-the-shelf mold is often the better choice when an existing shape already fits the product and the goal is to start quickly with minimal development cost.

A custom mold becomes useful when the product needs its own geometry, branding, weight, cavity layout, equipment fit, material/documentation or repeat-production control.

The right choice is not “custom is always better.” It depends on what must be unique or controlled.

Choose an existing mold when:

  • the shape already fits the product
  • branding is not required
  • exact piece weight is not critical
  • a small test run is the main goal
  • production equipment does not need a custom pitch/layout
  • the buyer accepts the catalog dimensions

For early recipe testing, an off-the-shelf tray can be a faster learning tool than custom development.

Custom development becomes useful when:

  • the shape is proprietary
  • logo/branding matters
  • target grams/volume matter
  • the mold must fit existing equipment
  • cavity count/pitch must be controlled
  • support/handling must be engineered
  • food-contact documentation must match a selected material/market
  • repeat production must use the same approved revision

Compare the Whole Project, Not Only Unit Price

Custom cost can include:

  • CAD/modeling
  • master/tool development
  • prototype
  • revisions
  • production molds
  • packing/shipping

For applicable custom RTV molds, production MOQ starts from 20 molds per approved design.

Simple 3D modeling is typically around USD 50 when required and straightforward.

Do not compare custom tooling to a catalog mold using only a per-piece price.

Higher Volume Does Not Automatically Mean One Process

If the customer needs a mold to cast another material, higher output may mean more molds, more cavities or a different tray layout.

If the customer needs a finished silicone product, the process may be HCR/HTV compression molding, LSR injection molding or overmolding.

The object being purchased matters before volume economics can be compared.

Custom Geometry Creates a Project-Specific Asset

If logo, CAD, master/tool custody or exclusivity matters, define those rights in the quotation/PO/NDA.

Do not assume “custom” automatically means every CAD/tooling right is transferred.

Choose custom if you answer “yes” to several:

  • unique geometry?
  • logo?
  • target grams/volume?
  • equipment pitch?
  • special split/core/support?
  • controlled documentation?
  • repeat-order revision control?
  • retail/packaging constraints?

Is a custom mold always expensive?

No universal answer. Cost depends on CAD, master/tooling, mold size, structure, cavity count and quantity.

Can I prototype before ordering 20 molds?

Yes. Prototype/design approval should come before applicable RTV production quantity.

Should a startup begin with a catalog mold?

It can be a good option for recipe or market testing if the catalog geometry is acceptable.
