Silicone Mother Mold: The Jacket That Carries the Dump
A mother mold is the rigid jacket around a Shore 10A-20A RTV skin so the dump doesn't bulge. Extra silicone thickness is usually the wrong fix. MOQ 20.
A silicone mother mold is the rigid shell that lets a thin RTV skin copy detail and still hold shape when you pour. If you're casting anything heavy, tall, or in Shore 10A-20A, plan the jacket at DFM - not after the first tray sags. Pouring a thicker rubber wall to "make it stiffer" is how the mold gets expensive, heavy, and still bananas at the edge. The jacket is the cheap half of accuracy on a wet dump.

When the jacket is not optional
Use a mother mold when any of these is true:
- Cavity Shore is 10A-20A and the dump is wet or tall.
- A loaded food tray sags enough to make outer-row pieces heavy (~0.5-1.5 mm edge drop is already a grams problem).
- A concrete, plaster, or resin vessel would balloon the skin.
- A two-part mold's keys live in a floppy flange.
- Operators have to carry a full mold; the shell is also a handle.
Skip it on a tiny, shallow, open-back stamp that sits on a flat bench and never sees a hydrostatic head.
Common mix-up: buying more Shore A instead of a shell
A 40A brick can still bulge if the wall is thin and the pour is heavy. A 15A skin in a fitted jacket can hold a chocolate or pectin dump better than an unsupported 30A slab. Perceived stiffness is thickness × Shore × support, not the durometer on the TDS.
How we build a jacket you can reassemble
- Split the jacket on a line that does not fight the silicone split.
- Key the skin into the shell so the cavity sits in the same pocket every dump. A loose drop-in rotates.
- Don't let the shell trap the casting. If you smash the jacket to demold, the split is wrong.
- Put grip points on the shell, not on a 10A lip.
- Name the shell material on the PO. Plaster is cheap and brittle. Resin/FRP survives shipping. A printed jacket is repeatable for recasts.
Shipping a mother-mold job without packing the shell as a rigid assembly is how keys get crushed - packaging and export pack.

Failure: bulge, then "just pour it thicker"
Symptom: Outer cavities dump heavy; a vessel wall is fat at the midriff; keys don't seat after a few opens; the empty mold looks fine on the desk.
Confirm: Measure the empty skin relaxed, then filled with the real material (or a density-matched stand-in). Photograph the jacket gap.
Fix: Fit a rigid shell. Recast the skin only if it has taken a permanent set. Don't add 10 mm of extra RTV as the first commercial move.
Worked example: 48-cavity pectin tray vs a 12 kg concrete vessel
Same factory, two jackets. The 48-cavity gummy sheet needed a flat, stiff backing so outer-row bears didn't run 3-6% heavy. The 12 kg concrete planter needed a split FRP mother mold around a thin high-tear skin so the operator could peel without carrying 15 mm of dead rubber. We would not have "solved" either job by ordering 40A and skipping the shell. Prototype 3-7 days after CAD lock, then MOQ 20.
What to ask when you're buying a mother mold
- Is the quoted Shore the skin, and is a jacket in the price?
- What wet mass or loaded-tray deflection is the shell designed for?
- How do skin and shell key, and can they be assembled wrong?
- What is the shell made of, and does it ship inside the same crate?
- On reorder, do we recast the skin only or rebuild the jacket too?
When this page is the wrong route
A 6-cavity shallow chocolate bar that lives on a granite slab can skip the mother mold. A steel gummy *part* tool is a WYD conversation, not a thicker RTV jacket. Geometry and wet mass override cavity count.

We would not recommend thickening the rubber first
We would not recommend raising Shore A to skip a jacket on a loaded food tray. We would not ship a 10A skin without naming how it keys into the shell. We would not freeze a one-piece mother mold that will not fit the buyer's door, then ask to fold the silicone.

Can I skip the jacket if I order 40A? Not if the dump is wet, tall, or the tray spans like a depositor sheet. Support beats durometer.
