Custom pillar candle molds: hot-wax jacket and wick path

A pillar candle mold looks simple until the wax is liquid and tall. Hydrostatic load plus pour temperature will balloon an unsupported 10A skin, flatten texture, and throw diameter before the wax even sets. Don't assume "silicone is flexible so one-piece always works." A straight pillar with honest draft is often one-piece. A sculptural pillar or object with strong undercuts needs a controlled split so you aren't tearing thin silicone or cutting the mold each pour. Wick access belongs in CAD

Wick position should be designed, not stabbed after the fact if the SKU is production. Depending on the product, the mold may include a formed wick path or a simple piercing method. Say which you want on the RFQ. A wick that walks off-center is a first-article fail, not an operator skill issue.

Wax type, pour temperature, and bulge

Soy, paraffin, and blends behave differently on cool-down. Typical pours sit roughly 55 C for some soy blends through about 70-85 C for many paraffins - inside platinum RTV service, but a thin 10A wall on a tall pillar will bulge while the wax is liquid. Fragrance oils can swell or tack a surface; name the scent family if it's aggressive. Loaded sag without a jacket is about 0.5-1.5 mm at the edge - a banana pillar. Structure is the mother mold, not a harder Shore.

Texture (wood, stone, botanical) copies from the master. Don't put detail where it creates an impossible demolding path. Recast against the unsanded master if a skin tears.

When this pillar advice does not apply

Don't "proof" a candle mold in a 200 C kitchen oven unless that grade and geometry were meant for it. Soap alkali is a different attack - soap loaf molds or the soap hub. Food-contact 177.2600 doesn't belong on a fragrance pillar. LSR candle vessels as molded parts are a parts OEM / wydsilicone.com. Geometry can override quantity: a locked figurine still needs a split at 40 pours.

We would not recommend a one-piece 10A block for a tall undercut pillar

We would not recommend skipping a mother mold and then blaming Shore for bulge. We would not hang FDA extraction on a fragrance candle tool. We would not treat candle RTV as a soap CP mold. We would not cut the mold each pour as a "process."

FAQ

Do I need a split mold for a pillar? Only if draft and undercuts say so. A straight pillar with honest draft is often one-piece. Figurines with arms and ears usually aren't.

Will fragrance oil ruin the mold? Some citrus and spice oils swell or tack platinum. Name the scent. A plaque test beats a surprise after MOQ 20.

Is this a food-grade mold? Not by default. Candle tools are fragrance/wax cavities. Don't copy a gummy 177.2600 path onto a pillar.

How fast can I test a pour? Prototype commonly 3-7 business days after CAD lock. Pour your wax before multiplying.

Can you mold a wick hole? Yes if we design it. Piercing after pour is fine for some SKUs and sloppy for others. Put the choice on the RFQ.
