Clear RTV Mold Yellowing: UV vs Peroxide | RUUIPON

A transparent platinum RTV mold that has gone straw-yellow is usually light, heat, or the pour — not a surprise "non-food" switch. Platinum addition-cure can still yellow in a shop window, in a hot dump cycle, or against a resin that stains. Tin-cure starts more yellow and keeps moving. Peroxide-cured HCR parts yellow by a different mechanism and do not belong in this RFQ. You confirm by comparing an unused spare stored in the dark against the working tool, and by naming the rubber family in writing. Recasting "water-clear" without changing storage or chemistry will yellow on the same calendar.

Does not apply when the cavity was never clear (pigmented food trays), when the yellow is chocolate fat bloom on the pour, or when you are reading a consumer "platinum = never yellows" blog. Platinum is the better start; it is not a UV-proof window.

Three yellows that get mixed on the same email

Unused spare in a drawer is still water-clear; the window-sill worker is straw. Cause: UV / visible light. Confirm: same PO, different storage. Fix: store in the dark. Recast if cosmetics on the tool matter for a see-through resin process. We would not promise a clear tool that lives on a sunlit packing table.

Yellow only where hot wax, hot resin, or a dishwasher hit the face. Cause: thermal + the pour's chemistry (some amines, some fragrances). Confirm: a cool, unused cavity on the same tray is still clearer. Fix: compatibility conversation. A barrier on a *craft* tool is sometimes possible. Food-contact: don't paint a coating and keep the 177.2600 story. Recast in a grade we will spec for that pour, or change the pour.

Whole mass was already yellow at demold, including the jacket sprue. Cause: tin-cure, an off-ratio platinum, or a "clear" kit that was never water-clear. Confirm: paperwork. If the cheap vendor said food-grade and the sprue is amber on day one, you may not have platinum. Fix: remake in named platinum if clear + food (or clear + resin photography) is actually the spec. Don't dye it back.

Clear tool stained by a pigmented resin or a curry-colored food experiment. Cause: stain, not bulk yellowing. Confirm: a cut through the wall — color is a skin, bulk is still clearer. Fix: some stains don't reverse. Recast; retire that well from food if the stain is a hygiene argument. Don't bleach-soak to "whiten" — you'll yellow more.

Buyer compared an RTV skin to a peroxide HCR spatula that yellowed in a drawer. Cause: wrong chemistry family. Peroxide HCR and platinum RTV are not interchangeable evidence. Confirm: is the yellow object even a mold? Fix: route *parts* to WYD. Keep this tool an RTV conversation.

Worked example (anonymized)

A see-through resin figurine split, platinum, stored on a south window "to keep it dry." Three months: straw jacket, still usable, customer thought we switched to tin. Drawer spare from the same PO was still clear. We recast one working skin for photography, added a storage line to the traveler (dark, bagged). No Shore change, no $50 3D.

One procurement mix-up

"FDA clear silicone" is not a color spec and not a factory stamp. 21 CFR 177.2600 is extraction of the finished article. If you need water-clear for process visibility, write "clear platinum, store dark, baseline photo at T1." Tooling charge ≠ a lifetime against UV.

What to ask when you're buying

• Water-clear vs translucent vs pigmented — which do you actually need?
• Platinum named on the quote?
• Storage: dark bag or a window packing table?
• Pours that stain (pigmented resin, spices, fragrance)?
• Baseline photo at demold required on the traveler?
• Article tests if food-contact, separate from color.

FAQ

Does platinum RTV stay water-clear forever? No. It is the better start than tin. UV, heat, and some pours still amber it. Store dark; write clear as a T1 cosmetic if it matters.

Is yellowing proof the mold is not food-grade? No. Color is not the 177.2600 extraction. A yellow food tray can still be a documented article — or a stained well you should retire. Don't use color as the cert.

Can I reverse yellowing with sunlight or bleach? We would not. Sun adds UV. Bleach attacks the network. Recast and change storage.

Why did my spatula yellow in a drawer but this mold didn't? Different family. Peroxide HCR parts are not RTV evidence. Parts quotes go to wydsilicone.com.

If I approve a clear sample, is MOQ 20 guaranteed the same color in a year? No. Approve T1 color, store dark, and recast when cosmetics fail. Production is 20 pieces per design, not a color warranty against a window. $50 3D only if CAD still applies.
