Oil Bleed on Aged RTV: Plasticizer vs Tin | RUUIPON
A greasy film on old RTV may be tin bleed, a filled cheap mix, or last week's oil. Confirm with a spare and a wipe test before you recast or add oil.
A slick film that returns after you wipe an old RTV mold is not always "the silicone breaking down." Tin-cure and some heavily filled cheap mixes can exude. Platinum food trays more often show last week's cocoa butter, fragrance oil, or dishwasher detergent that soaked the micro-texture. You tell those apart with a cavity you never poured, a paper-towel wipe that you watch for an hour, and the rubber family on the PO. Adding more oil "for release" makes every one of those films worse. We would not grease a food mold to hide bleed.

Does not apply when the face is still chemically tacky from inhibition (strings on a stick — scrap the food skin), when the film is water (fog test), or when you are describing flash oil on an HCR part. Don't treat a greasy well as proof of FDA failure; 21 CFR 177.2600 is an extraction test on the article you actually ship.
Wipe test, spare cavity, paperwork
Paper towel picks up a film; an hour later the same well is slick again; unused spare does it too. Cause: true exudation — often tin-cure, or a filled mix bleeding plasticizer. Confirm: spare never saw food or resin, still wets a towel. Face is cured (no strings), just oily. Fix: for food, recast in platinum we will actually spec. For craft, decide if the bleed is cosmetic. We would not keep multiplying a bleeding tin food sample to MOQ 20.
Unused spare stays dry; only used wells return slick after a wipe. Cause: pour leftover — cocoa butter, pectin syrup, fragrance, mold release you were told to try on YouTube. Confirm: spare vs used, same lighting. Towel smells like chocolate or perfume, not like rubber. Fix: wash the right cabinet. Stop oiling. Recast only if the texture is etched and will not rinse.
Film appears after months in a polyethylene bag in a hot stockroom. Cause: heat-accelerated bleed on a mix that was always marginal, or bag plasticizer transferring *onto* the tray (less common, but real when the bag is cheap and the room is hot). Confirm: a tray from the same PO stored cool and unbagged. Fix: storage spec. Recast the hot-bagged lot if food-contact is in play and the film returns after a documented wash.
Slick plus sour odor plus the tray has shrunk off the jacket keys. Cause: tin still moving in storage (tin does not sit still like platinum's ~0.1–0.3%). Confirm: keys that used to fit, odor, paperwork that never said platinum. Fix: platinum recast, new keys if the jacket is reused. Don't "re-oil to size."
Buyer wiped with solvent, rubber swelled, then "oiled" as it recovered. Cause: solvent swell, then exudation of whatever the network just drank. Confirm: dimensional change after the wipe. Fix: stop that solvent. Compatibility RFQ. Possible recast.

The photo that would prove exudation: unused spare, towel at T=0 and T=60 min on the same well, clock in frame. A lifestyle "oily mold" shot does not separate fat from bleed.
Worked example (anonymized)
A soap-loaf skin sold as "food-grade silicone" by a previous vendor, greasy at six months, keys loose. Unused cavity still wet a towel in an hour. We poured a platinum witness against the same master after a clean and seal. Towel stayed dry at 60 min. Production MOQ 20 in platinum. The soap pour still needs a fragrance-oil compatibility note — that's the used-well path, not tin bleed. No $50 3D; master existed.

One procurement mix-up
"Non-oily" on a marketplace listing is not a mix sheet. Name platinum vs tin, and forbid food-cavity oiling in the traveler. Tooling charge is not unrestricted ownership of every recast when a hot bag ruined a lot you stored for a year.

FAQ
Is a greasy film normal on platinum food trays as they age? A returning film on an unused spare is not what we want from platinum. Used wells that smell like chocolate are leftover fat. Wipe-test the spare.
Can I keep using a bleeding tin mold for soap? Craft-only, if you accept odor, shrink, and possible stain on light soaps. We still would not put that skin on a food PO.
Does oil bleed mean the mold failed 177.2600? Bleed is not that test. Extraction is a lab method on the finished article. A bleeding food tool is still a tool we would recast rather than argue.
Will talc or cornstarch hide the slick? On food, that's another film. Don't. Recast or wash correctly.
Do I pay $50 CAD to recast a bleeder? Only if we still need CAD scope. A chemistry recast against a good master is a skin pour. Production remains MOQ 20 pieces per design after the dry witness.
