How to Store Silicone Molds Without Warping
Prevent silicone mold warping by storing molds clean and supported, avoiding sustained bending or concentrated loads, using support trays for large molds and checking flatness before the next production run.

Flexible silicone can take a temporary or longer-lasting set when stored under sustained deformation, uneven load or poor support.
Storage should preserve the geometry the mold needs during the next production run.
There is no universal “stack four trays” rule for every mold.
A large flat tray should generally be supported in a way that keeps it flat.
A sculptural mold may need its support shell.
A mold should not be forced into a compressed shape simply to save shelf space.
Avoid:
- hanging heavy flexible trays by one edge
- folding
- narrow-edge storage if it creates bowing
- packing under uneven pressure
If stacking is appropriate:
- support evenly
- avoid pressure on cavity domes
- use rigid interleaves/support when needed
Protect stored molds from environmental conditions that exceed the selected material’s recommended storage limits.
Follow the selected material supplier’s storage guidance. Store the mold clean and supported to avoid distortion, and protect it from conditions incompatible with that material.
Keep food-contact molds:
- protected from contamination
- separated from craft/industrial chemical tools
- clean before storage
Inspect:
- flatness/shape
- tears
- surface
- contamination
- support shell
- parting surfaces
Do not promise every warped mold can be restored.
A temporary set may relax under appropriate supported storage, but permanent deformation or damage may require replacement.
Can I store silicone trays vertically?
Only if the specific tray/support method prevents deformation. Large soft trays may bow.
How many trays can I stack?
There is no universal count. It depends on tray stiffness, support, geometry and load distribution.
My old mold has bowed between seasonal runs. Can I still use it?
Test whether the distortion affects cavity volume, product flatness or handling before production.
Is softer silicone more likely to deform in storage?
Material hardness can affect flexibility, but geometry/support are also important.
Should every mold be stored cavity-up?
No universal orientation applies to every design.
