A useful supplier file should let the buyer connect:

the material grade → the compound actually used → the finished mold/article → the intended market and contact condition

The exact document set depends on the destination market and the customer's own regulatory/compliance program.

FDA, LFGB/BfR-related documents and EU food-contact requirements should not be treated as interchangeable logos on a quotation.

Start with the intended use

Before requesting certificates, define:

  • destination market;
  • food type;
  • repeated-use or single-use;
  • hot deposit temperature;
  • maximum contact temperature;
  • contact duration;
  • cleaning/sanitation method;
  • silicone color/pigment;
  • whether the mold contacts fatty, aqueous, acidic or other food systems;
  • any retailer/customer-specific requirement.

A document can be valid for a material and still not answer your actual use condition.

Identify the exact silicone compound

Ask the supplier to state:

  • silicone manufacturer/supplier if commercially disclosable;
  • material/grade code;
  • cure system;
  • nominal Shore;
  • color/pigment system;
  • lot/batch traceability method;
  • whether the production mold uses the same material as the tested/documented compound.

A generic "platinum silicone" description is not a material identity.

TDS is not a food-contact test report

A TDS generally describes technical material properties.

It may include:

  • viscosity;
  • hardness;
  • tensile/tear data;
  • cure conditions;
  • service-temperature guidance.

It does not automatically prove food-contact compliance.

Likewise, an SDS addresses safety/handling information and is not a migration report.

The buyer should understand what each document proves.

FDA 21 CFR 177.2600: ask what the document actually says

For U.S. rubber articles intended for repeated food contact, suppliers commonly reference 21 CFR 177.2600 where applicable.

The buyer should ask:

  • Does the report/declaration identify the material or finished article tested?
  • What extraction/contact conditions were used?
  • Does the color/pigment match production?
  • Is the report current and traceable?
  • Is the product's actual use within the intended scope?

Do not write "FDA-approved factory" as a substitute for material/article evidence.

The FDA does not issue a blanket factory approval for a custom silicone mold merely because the supplier has a report.

LFGB and BfR references require precise wording

European/German food-contact buyers often request "LFGB."

That shorthand can hide several different documents or test approaches.

Ask the supplier to provide the actual report and identify:

  • test laboratory;
  • sample/material tested;
  • applicable method/recommendation;
  • date;
  • result;
  • any sensory/migration/extractable tests included.

Do not assume an FDA-related report automatically equals the customer's German/EU requirement.

EU market: separate framework, GMP and material-specific evidence

For EU sales, buyers may need to consider the broader food-contact framework, including Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 and GMP Regulation (EC) No 2023/2006, along with applicable national/material-specific requirements and customer specifications.

Silicone is not handled exactly like every plastic under one single universal harmonized EU measure.

The buyer/importer should confirm the applicable compliance route for the actual product and market.

RUUIPON should avoid pretending one generic PDF is a universal "EU certificate."

Pigment/color must be included in the material review

A natural/translucent compound and a colored production mold are not automatically identical from a compliance perspective.

Ask:

  • pigment supplier/code where traceability requires it;
  • whether color masterbatch/additive is covered by the food-contact documentation;
  • whether the tested sample used the same color system;
  • whether color migration/sensory testing is required by the buyer.

If different colors are planned, treat color as a controlled production variable.

Finished-mold testing may be required

A raw-material report may not satisfy every buyer.

Depending on market, customer, use condition and product risk, the buyer may request testing on the finished molded article.

Potential areas can include:

  • migration/extractables;
  • sensory odor/taste;
  • color transfer;
  • repeated-use conditions;
  • temperature/contact simulation.

The exact test plan should be defined by the buyer's compliance team or qualified laboratory/regulatory advisor.

Do not promise a universal test package in a marketing page.

Traceability connects documents to production

For a serious commercial program, ask whether the factory can retain:

  • material lot/batch;
  • pigment batch;
  • production date;
  • job/PO number;
  • mold revision;
  • relevant cure/post-process record;
  • QC release record.

If a report exists but the factory cannot tell which material lot was used, the documentation chain is weak.

Supplier-document checklist before PO

Ask for the documents that actually apply:

  • material TDS;
  • SDS;
  • food-contact declaration/test report;
  • applicable FDA-related documentation;
  • LFGB/BfR-related report if required;
  • EU/market declaration as applicable;
  • REACH declaration where requested;
  • pigment/color documentation;
  • CoC/CoA where the supply chain supports it;
  • third-party laboratory report;
  • traceability statement.

Do not request every acronym by default. Request the right evidence for the market.
