Registration Keys for Two-Part Silicone Molds
Learn what registration keys do in a two-part silicone mold, how key geometry and placement affect alignment, and why keys locate the halves while clamps or fixtures provide closing force.

Registration keys are matching features that help two mold halves return to the same alignment after opening.
They are part of the locating system. They do not replace the closing force provided by the mold geometry, support shell, straps, clamps or fixture where those are required.
A good key design should locate the halves repeatedly without tearing the silicone, trapping debris or making the mold difficult to open.
Locate the Mold Halves

Registration keys help control:
- XY alignment
- relative rotation
- parting-line position
- repeatable reassembly
They are especially useful when the mold is opened every cycle and both halves must return to the same position.
Locate With Keys, Hold With the Appropriate Closing Method
A key can align two halves, but it should not be treated as the only mechanism resisting mold pressure or handling loads.
Depending on the mold, closing support can come from:
- the flange itself
- rigid support shell
- straps
- clamps
- external fixture
The correct method follows the mold size, geometry and filling process.
Design the Key for Flexible Silicone
Key geometry should avoid:
- sharp roots
- fragile thin sections
- deep features that are difficult to separate
- excessive interference
- shapes that can be assembled incorrectly
Rounded, well-supported features are generally easier on flexible silicone than sharp mechanical-looking pins copied from metal tooling.
Select dimensions for the geometry, material and expected demolding load, then verify alignment, release and durability with the prototype.
Put Location Features Where They Control the Parting Surface
Placement should consider:
- mold span
- parting-line length
- large unsupported areas
- rotation risk
- fill/vent paths
- clamps/support shell
- operator access
For asymmetric molds, the key pattern can also help prevent incorrect 180-degree assembly.
Key Strength Depends on More Than Shore A
Key durability depends on:
- local silicone section
- key shape
- tear strength of the selected material
- clearance/interference
- how the mold is opened
- surrounding support
Do not select key geometry from Shore A alone.
Torn Key
Check sharp root, insufficient local support, excessive interference or severe peel.
Loose / Ambiguous Alignment
Check key placement, geometry and whether the flange can rotate or shift despite the keys.
Mold Difficult to Close
Check debris, deformation, excessive interference and whether the halves are being loaded against the wrong features.
Flash at the Parting Line
Check closing method and parting-surface condition in addition to key alignment.
What to Verify Before Production
- halves assemble in only the intended orientation
- parting surfaces seat fully
- keys do not tear during repeated opening
- no key traps casting material
- seam/flash meets the actual requirement
- support/clamp method is practical
How many keys should a two-part silicone mold have?
There is no universal count. Key number and placement follow mold span, shape, flange and alignment needs.
Should the keys be tight?
They should locate the halves without causing binding or tearing. The correct clearance depends on the material and geometry.
Are registration keys the same as metal mold guide pins?
No. Flexible silicone keys behave differently from rigid guide-pin systems.

Why does my two-part mold still flash even though it has keys?
Because keys mainly locate the halves. Flash can still result from poor closing force, damaged parting surfaces, deformation, debris or an unsuitable clamp/support method.
Can you simply add more keys?
Sometimes, but more keys are not automatically better. Placement and geometry matter more than an arbitrary count.
