Resin Mold Bubbles: Causes and Fixes

Bubbles in a resin casting can come from the mold surface, resin mixture or the way the cavity is filled.

The fastest diagnostic question is:

Does the defect repeat in the same location?

A repeatable pit often points toward the mold/master. Random bubbles that move between castings more often point toward the resin process.

Cast more than one sample under the same conditions.

If the same defect repeats in the same spot:

• inspect mold surface
• inspect master defect
• inspect trapped pocket geometry

If bubbles move:

• inspect resin mixing
• viscosity
• moisture
• temperature
• fill direction
• vacuum/pressure method

Check:

• pit/void in mold
• master defect
• damaged surface
• contamination
• incomplete wetting around detail

Follow the resin supplier’s:

• mix ratio
• pot life
• mixing method
• temperature guidance

Avoid whipping unnecessary air.

Higher viscosity can trap air more easily.

Moisture can also create defects in some resin systems.

Use the resin TDS/process.

High points, sharp pockets and deep detail can trap air.

Options can include:

• changed fill direction
• vent
• overflow
• geometry revision

Do not prescribe one universal vacuum time or pressure.

Follow the actual resin supplier/process and equipment limits.

We see random bubbles after pouring resin. Is the silicone mold defective?

Not necessarily. Compare whether the bubbles repeat in the same location.

Should we vacuum the silicone longer?

If the defect is in the resin casting rather than the mold itself, changing silicone degassing may not solve it.

Can you add vents after the first prototype?

Yes, if testing shows repeatable trapped-air locations.
