Platinum vs Tin Cure Silicone Molds: How to Choose

Platinum-cure and tin-cure RTV silicones use different cure chemistry.

Both can reproduce detailed geometry, but they should not be reduced to “platinum = production” and “tin = hobby.”

The correct choice depends on:

  • intended application
  • casting material
  • food-contact requirement
  • dimensional requirement
  • cure inhibition risk
  • storage/aging expectations
  • cost
  • selected supplier formulation

Platinum / Addition Cure

Uses an addition-cure system with a platinum catalyst.

Potential advantages can include:

  • low byproduct cure
  • good dimensional stability in suitable grades
  • food-contact grades available
  • broad use in production mold making

Potential risk:

  • cure inhibition from incompatible contaminants/materials.

Tin / Condensation Cure

Uses a condensation-cure system with a tin catalyst.

Potential advantages can include:

  • useful processing latitude for some non-food mold-making applications
  • lower material cost in some formulations

Potential trade-offs can include:

  • cure byproducts
  • dimensional change depending on formulation
  • aging behavior different from addition-cure systems

Use the actual material TDS, not a generic chemistry stereotype.

Platinum cure itself does not automatically make a silicone food-safe.

For food-contact molds, confirm:

  • exact grade
  • intended use
  • destination market
  • available test documentation
  • color/formulation where relevant

Platinum systems can be sensitive to certain contaminants/materials.

Test uncertain master and material combinations against the selected silicone grade. There is no single banned-material list for every pour.

  • mold geometry
  • temperature
  • measurement method

For precision projects, validate the actual selected material/process.

Cure chemistry alone does not determine:

  • tear strength
  • elongation
  • surface finish
  • mold life

Compare the exact product data.

Tin-cure materials may cost less in some applications.

Platinum-cure materials may justify higher cost where:

Do not assume so. Food-contact status and casting compatibility must be reviewed separately.

Does platinum cure mean zero shrinkage?

Does tin cure mean the mold only lasts a few months?
