Why Gummies Stick or Tear During Demolding | RUUIPON

A gummy that will not dump, or that dumps with a torn ear, is three different failures that look the same from a packing table. Pectin gel that is still wet will stretch and snap. A cavity that is still damp will glue a set piece. A mascot neck that is thinner than the Shore can peel will tear even when the gel is perfect. You separate those three with a scale, a dry-cavity check, and a photo of the tear path — not by asking us to "make it harder."

This is for pectin or gelatin dumped into a custom RTV gummy mold. Steel depositor plates, LSR gummy-*shaped parts*, and compression articles belong on wydsilicone.com. RUUIPON pours the tray: master, box, A/B, vacuum, jacket. Bao'an / Shajing, since 2018.

Does not apply when you are running a starch mogul, when the piece is a hard-candy deposit that is supposed to shatter, or when the tray is a $10 catalog bear with unknown tin-cure rubber.

Three bench checks before you change Shore

Same tray, same formula, same operator. Put the results on the RFQ if you want a recast.

1. Weigh the torn piece against a clean dump from the same row. If the torn piece is light, the gel never filled or it stretched on peel. If weights match and the tear is always the same arm, geometry is grabbing.

2. Fog the empty cavity with a cool breath after you "dried" it. Droplets that nucleate on the logo or the mascot armpit mean the tray is still wet. A matte, even fog means the face is dry enough to test gel.

3. Photograph the tear from the cavity side, not the pretty side. A shiny gel skin left in a dry well is an undercut. A dull smear across a whole pocket is set-time or a wet face. A clean cavity with a torn ear still in your hand is a wall that is too thin for that Shore.

Symptom clusters we actually see

Neck or ear tears; the body dumps. Cause: the peel path is thinner than the gel's tear strength at that Shore, *or* the gel is under-set and the neck is acting as a sprue. Confirm: wait one extra set window on three cavities only. If those three dump whole, you had a gel clock, not a mold. If they still tear in the same fillet, look at draft and wall. Fix: recast with a fillet at the neck and a touch of draft. We would not jump Shore 10A to 40A to "save" a 1 mm arm.

Whole piece stays in the pocket; you have to dig. Cause: wet tray, sugar syrup on the face, or pectin that never gelled. Confirm: the leftover film is sticky-sweet vs the rubber itself feeling tacky. Rubber tack on a *new* mold is inhibition — different article, different remake. Sweet film is wash and dry. Fix: rinse, cavity-up dry until matte, then dump. Do not oil a food-contact face. If a commercial dishwasher is leaving film, put a hand-wash spec on the next PO.

Center row dumps; outer row tears or stays heavy. Cause: loaded-tray sag, not a "bad outer cavity." Edge pockets sit 0.5–1.5 mm lower, fill 3–6% heavy, and peel late. Confirm: weigh outer vs center on a supported pan vs on the bench. If the difference shrinks on the pan, you need a jacket, not a new Shore. Fix: add or stiffen the jacket; do not max cavity count on a floppy sheet. Send tray size limits with the RFQ.

Gelatin dumped last month; pectin on the same tray now tears. Cause: pectin is stickier and peels later. The tray was cut for gelatin dump. Confirm: same wash, same dry, same dump motion, only the formula changed. Fix: recast peel and jacket. Name pectin vs gelatin before CAD lock.

First dumps were clean; after a week of wet nested fridge trays, faces tear. Cause: cold wet storage; next dump vacuum-locks. Confirm: nested-wet vs dry separated. Fix: dry, store cavity-up. Recast only if a nick is now a tear starter.

Worked example (anonymized)

A 48-cavity mascot, 4.0 g pectin, platinum ~25A, no jacket. Center dumped 4.0–4.1 g. Outer row 4.3 g, tore at the left ear. Buyer asked for 40A. Same dump on a sheet pan: outer row 4.1 g, same fillet tear. Recast: jacket plus a 0.4 mm fillet, Shore unchanged. Raising Shore would have locked the ear and hidden the sag.

One procurement mix-up

"Same as the Amazon bear, but our logo" is not an RFQ. Grams, pectin vs gelatin, tray size, dump method, and jacket yes/no are the quote. Tooling charge is not unrestricted ownership of the master or every recast — write who keeps what.

What to ask when you're buying

  • Pectin or gelatin, target grams, depositor pitch if any?
  • Tray envelope and whether a jacket is allowed?
  • Which feature tore — cavity-side photo, not only the packed piece.
  • Wash method, and whether trays nest wet.
  • 21 CFR 177.2600 / LFGB as article tests, not an "FDA-approved factory" stamp. ISO 3302-1 class if you have one (M2 is a common default).

FAQ

Is a torn gummy ear always a too-soft mold? No. Confirm set time and a dry cavity first. A repeating tear at one fillet after those checks is geometry. Shore is a recast decision after the photo.

Can I oil the cavity so pectin dumps? No. A dry platinum food-contact face is the release surface. Oil fights the next wash and the document pack.

Why do only the outer-row gummies tear? Often sag. A loaded unsupported sheet can drop 0.5–1.5 mm at the edge; those pockets fill 3–6% heavy and peel late. Weigh on a pan before you recast Shore.

Will a gelatin tray run pectin without a recast? Sometimes for a shallow dump. Sticky pectin usually needs a different peel and jacket. Name the formula before CAD lock.

Do you remake trays that still tear after a documented dump? If the same feature tears on a dry tray with weights in spec, we recast fillet, draft, jacket, or inhibition. $50 3D only when CAD is still open. MOQ 20 per design.
